My name is Sonya Chandler and I am a licensed Esthetician and beauty enthusiast. I spent 15 years of my adult life working in corporate America. I have a background in Human Resources, with a specialty in Leave of Absence. In 2015, my stress level was through the roof and affecting my health. At that time, I decided to shift gears. I left my job and tried my hand in insurance sales. Let’s just say sales it not my calling.
About a year before I left my job, I thought about enrolling in beauty school. I was fascinated with eyelash extension and make up. At the time, the demands of my job prevented me from being able to commit to school. In September of 2015, I spoke with my husband about going to beauty school and he said go for it. He was so supportive of me through all these changes. I enrolled and in February 2016, I began the Esthetics program at Tricoci University of Beauty Culture. While in school, I learned so much and loved everything from facials to waxing and everything in between. I found myself with so many options, but what would my niche be?
Until I went to school for esthetics, I had never had a facial or been waxed. I really enjoy receiving these services. During school, we received a demo of a Brazilian wax and I thought to myself, I can do that, but first let me experience it. Shortly after seeing the demo, I had my first Brazilian wax. I was blown away by the result and even more blown away by how sexy it made me feel. It was at that moment that I realized I wanted to make other feel the same way I felt in that moment.
About a month before I graduated school, I contacted my wax studio to schedule my next wax. At which time, I found out my Esthetician no longer worked there. I saw an opportunity to get my foot in the door and leapt. I interviewed and was hired to run the front desk. Within 2 months, I was flown to out of state to receive extensive full body wax training. A little more than a year later, I was flown to Colorado for further training in advance body wax technique which included the male Brazilian. By early 2018, I had become one of the most popular waxers at that establishment.
With tons of encouragement from family and friends, I decided it was time to branch out on my own. During the summer of 2019, I started working with a coach through the Business Ownership Initiative (BOI), which is a part of the Indy Chamber, to begin the business planning process. After months of planning, I opened the doors to Soyala Aesthetica LLC on January 28th 2020.
I am so happy and blessed to be in business for myself. I am so thankful for all of the people who have supported me in the endeavor.
